Meet Julie!! She is a bright light, genuinely kind-hearted, always ready to help, and full of encouraging words. One encounter that really stuck out to me early this Fall when we were working on all of our cleaning projects to get our shops guest-ready again. Julie was the first to offer to help… but not just help…. she offered it enthusiastically and joyfully. She is also the creator of one of our latest Tik Toks that just put a smile on our faces. She has a gift of making everyone around her feel seen & loved.

Where are you from?

Marysville, MI

What is your favorite Coffee Drink?

At this point I am undecided, but I do love a good matcha or a lavender vanilla latte

What do you LOVE about Midland or Bay City?

I love how much of a sense of community there is in both Midland and Bay City, I also love going down town and walking around and seeing all of the small local businesses. My grandma lives in Bay City, so I love it because being in Bay City reminds me of family and all of the love I have for her and she has for me.

How do you hope to make Midland a better community?

I hope to make Midland a better community just by being kind to people and talking to them about their days and what is happening in their lives when they get coffee. I know I am not around Midland a lot, unless I am working at Live Oak, but I do think that small acts of kindness can make a big impact. I hope that I can be a listening ear, a friendly face, and a warm smile for those coming in the shop and that my kindness will make their day a little bit better.

What is an embarrassing moment you can laugh at?

On my first day, I accidentally told someone we put 40 pumps of syrup into our 16 oz drink, instead of 40 grams. We both laughed about it after I realized and told her I was wrong.

RD- oh my! lol

What is your favorite thing about Live Oak?

I love the people here. Everyone is so genuine and kind and has their own unique amazing thing about them. I haven’t worked here very long but I already have a lot of people that I know I can go to if I ever need anything, even if it isn’t work related

RD- Awe Julie, you are so awesome…. I was recently made aware that Julie has a blog too….. and her post about Live Oak literally made me cry. We so love this community and so love that you have found a second home here….

What is your favorite quote, saying or scripture?

My favorite quote is from the song This Must Be The Place “never for money, always for love”

RD- oh so good… I have always loved, “give from love, not for love”… a great way to prioritize your mindset

What do you do for fun?

“It is okay to not be okay, but it is also important to know that you don't have to go through that alone.”

“It is okay to not be okay, but it is also important to know that you don’t have to go through that alone.”

I like to hammock, go on hikes, listen to music, and go on long drives with friends. I also love talk with people about the real things in life and what matters to them, what makes them them, and all of their hopes and dreams.

RD- yes…. to all of these things <3

What are you passionate about & what are some of your dreams?

I am very very passionate about mental health. As someone who has experienced struggles with mental health and has lots of family and friends who have done the same, I want to help educate people more on the issue and help end the stigma against mental health. It is okay to not be okay, but it is also important to know that you don’t have to go through that alone.

My dream is to open up my own non-profit that helps connect people to affordable and accessible mental health treatment and be a mental health counselor. I am also very passionate about the environment, and I dream of someday living in a very small house with almost no things, but just memories of places and people that I love. Hopefully I will learn how to become more minimalistic and focus more on the important things in life.

RD- wow Julie, I love your heart.

What is your favorite Charity and why?

I don’t know if I can pick just one favorite Charity because I have a few.

Mosaic Counseling: I worked as an intern at this non-profit for one summer and I am in love with their mission (making counseling affordable and accessible to those in Ottawa County) and the people there who make it all come true. There are some of the kindest, hard working humans there who are doing the most they can to support their county with the ongoing mental health crisis and I admire all of the time and effort they put in to ensure that people will get the help that they need.

Pine Mountain Settlement School: This is another group of the most kindest and most selfless people I know. They are located in Harlan County, Kentucky, and they help to ensure that their community has access to clean water, food, and housing if people are in need, and they also provide education to students in the area who do not have transportation or means of getting out of the small rural area for school. They also help run educational programs for people in the community and others from Kentucky to learn about sustainability, food waste, and help facilitate healthy relationships with the environment.

Relay for Life: Cancer is something that has impacted me and my family in a really great way. Relay for Life has always given me the opportunity to help raise money for those fighting and given me a way to remember those I have lost.

RD- These all sound really impactful.
