We have had the privilege of hosting “Coffee & Conversations” in our “house” for almost four years since Live Oak opened. The very dream of this space from the beginning has been to foster a safe space where we can connect with one another, face to face, over the simplicity of a warm cup of coffee. We believe in the power of authentic conversations where each person is honored and respected for their own personal heart & perspectives based on their story. We love Morgan Harper Nichols’ quote on empathy,

>
Empathy
“Let me hold the door for you.
I may have never walked in your shoes,
but I can see: your soles are worn,
your strength is torn
under the weight of a story
I have never lived before.
Let me hold the door for you.
After all you’ve walked through,
It’s the least I can do.”

and believe if we would all just pause, make space for each other and “hold the door open”, we would truly begin to understand and even grow in love for one another.

We live in unprecedented times. Turmoil, division, and fear make daily headlines…. but it is our deepest conviction that WE can write our own headlines. We get to choose which kind of communities we will create. We get to choose our words, actions and the ways that we show up in the world. But sometimes we are at a loss for how to begin… sometimes the differences we have with one another seem like too great a distance to be bridged.

This summer, we hosted Coffee & Conversations to discuss Racial Inequities and explored together ways that we could become Bridge Builders. We used Latasha Morrison’s Be A Bridge Discussion Guides. Emmy Montgomery facilitated the forum questions, while Lucius & Monica Young, Aerial Fields, & Bertha Vaughn so graciously shared their personal stories & experiences with us. We all left feeling closer, more connected and inspired to continue pursuing reconciliation and restoration.

This is why we have come up with a few simple questions to get you started on your own “Coffee & Conversations”. These 5 Simple questions are the beginning of longer conversations that we believe will truly help remind us that at the end of the day, we have much more in common than what separates us.

We would love to encourage you to invite someone to coffee. Open up your homes and your hearts. Our General Manager, Daniel Terhune, has also created for us some Notes From the Kitchen. We hope that his notes will help remove some of the obstacles or pressures of “hospitality”. With humor and his signature no-nonsense style, Daniel lays out how truly easy it is.

We hope to continue adding simple questions to our Coffee & Conversation Packs and would love your input. We have created a Google Form for you to provide us with questions that you have found to be beneficial in fostering connection.

Will you join us? Will you join us in resisting the temptation to isolate & hide during these times? Will you instead join us in our movement to break down walls by “breaking bread” together?

Together we can create a better, kinder, more welcoming community where we truly show in words and actions what it means to Love Your Neighbor.

As you host your own, we would also truly love if you would share your own stories with us. We would love to see pictures & hear about your own Coffee dates. When you email us: liveoakcoffeehouse@gmail.com and share your story we will send you a small bag of our Love Your Neighbor Coffee Blend for your next coffee date.

We truly love you all! We are here for you!
